India is all set to construct its first underwater tunnel in the river-front capital city of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati. If sources are to be believed, then this 3km long tunnel, for vehicular traffic, will be built in the Krishna River, connecting the administrative capital to Vijayawada.

  • As per reports, this transparent road tunnel has been envisaged in the detailed master plan of Amaravati and Singapore-based designers have been roped-in for the same.
  • It is believed that the project would be a major tourist attraction whence the State Government could earn a considerable revenue.
  • There are nearly 200 such tunnels in the world and if the AP Government is successful in seeking the Centre’s approval, then this will be the first of its kind in India.
  • The tunnel is envisioned to be built near Ibrahimpatnam, on the outskirts of Vijayawada. To boost tourism, there are plans to set-up an enormous giant wheel on the riverbank, which will function round-the-clock.
  • Following the advice of Chandrababu Naidu, the state chief minister, the underwater tunnel was included in the city’s master plan and would be to the ‘west side’ of the government core area where the Assembly, Secretariat and Raj Bhavan have been proposed.
  • However, the Union Shipping Ministry has launched a feasibility study on two other tunnels as well, one linking Kakdwip and Sagar Islands in West Bengal and the other connecting Chatham and Bamboo Flat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Well these are in the pipeline, but as of now, we can keep our fingers crossed for India’s first, transparent, underwater tunnel in Andhra Pradesh, which is soon to be. Can’t wait to drive through it!
